The Story
Behind this piece
Made to carry use, not just attention.
Some patterns never go out of style.
The brickwork pattern has been part of architecture for centuries because it feels balanced, familiar, and enduring. This board borrows that same visual language and translates it into wood. Rich walnut blocks are separated by thin maple lines, creating a design that feels structured and orderly while still allowing the natural grain to remain the star of the show.
At 20 in x 12 in x 2 in, this is a substantial piece. The deep walnut tones, the weight in hand, and the precision of the pattern give it a presence that immediately draws attention. Whether it is being used for meal preparation, carving, or serving a charcuterie spread, it has a way of becoming the centerpiece of the table.
Some pieces are functional. Some are decorative. The best ones manage to be both.
End grain boards are prized for their durability and performance. The wood fibers stand vertically, allowing knife edges to slip between them rather than cut across them. This helps preserve sharp knives, reduces visible wear, and creates a cutting surface designed to last for generations. With proper care, a board like this does not simply age; it develops character.
Maker's Notes
Decisions in the handwork
Every now and then a project comes together exactly as I imagined it.
This board was one of those rare occasions.
The idea was simple: create a brick pattern entirely from walnut and maple, then let the end grain bring the design to life. The challenge wasn't the concept; it was the execution. Every block had to align perfectly. Every maple line had to remain crisp and consistent. One small error early in the process would have echoed through the entire pattern.
As the board took shape, the design became more interesting than I had expected. Depending on the angle and the light, the walnut shifts from deep chocolate brown to warm bronze, while the maple lines create a rhythm that guides your eye across the surface.
Even now, years after making it, I still find myself stopping to look at it. That's usually how I know a piece worked.
Not because it's perfect, but because it still feels satisfying every time I see it.
