The Story

Behind this piece

Made to carry use, not just attention.

This board began with a simple idea: take the warmth and richness of walnut and introduce just enough contrast to make the design feel unexpected. The maple dashes create a woven pattern that reveals itself gradually, drawing your eye across the surface without overwhelming the natural beauty of the wood.

At 12 in x 20 in x 2 in, this is a substantial board built to handle everything from daily meal preparation to large family gatherings. Yet despite its size and weight, the pattern gives it a sense of lightness and precision. It feels equally at home on a kitchen counter, a dining table, a BBQ carving station, or displayed proudly between uses.

End grain cutting boards are often called the gold standard of wooden cutting boards. The wood fibers stand vertically, allowing knife edges to slip between them rather than cutting across them. This helps protect both the board and your knives while creating a surface that can serve beautifully for decades with proper care.

Maker's Notes

Decisions in the handwork

Some projects start with a function. Others start with a visual idea. This one started with a pattern.

I wanted to create something that felt structured and geometric, but still unmistakably handmade. The maple accents act like stitches holding the design together, while the walnut provides depth, movement, and warmth. As the pieces came together, the pattern began to resemble woven fabric, a detail I didn't fully appreciate until the board was nearly complete.

End grain boards are among my favorite things to make. They demand patience, precision, and a willingness to start over when something isn't quite right. Every strip, every cut, and every glue-up affects the final result. When it all comes together, you end up with a surface that is both durable enough for serious kitchen work and beautiful enough to leave on display.

This board carries a lot of weight in your hands, but the goal was always for it to feel elegant rather than heavy.
